Attorney General Corbett announces formation of Public Corruption Unit PDF Print E-mail

HARRISBURG - Attorney General Tom Corbett today announced the formation of a Public Corruption Unit within the Attorney General's Office.  The unit is designed to primarily combat corruption through the prosecution of elected officials and government employees.

Corbett has assigned seven seasoned prosecutors to the unit who will be specially designated to investigate and prosecute public corruption cases.

HARRISBURG — According to Attorney General Tom Corbett, when the next criminal charges come in a public corruption investigation of the State Legislature, people will be shocked by the staggering amount of taxpayer money involved.

"You will be stunned," he told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter Brad Bumstead. "It's the amount of money involved," said Corbett. The investigation, which has come to be known as “bonusgate,” involves the possible misuse of public resources to pay for campaign expenses and much more.

Politicians paid out $3.2 million in bonuses to legislative staffers because they worked on their reelection campaigns.  Now taxpayers are paying even more than that for the lawyers to defend them.  In the end this things is probably going to cost taxpayers well over $20 million dollars.  Here is another great article by Brad Bumsted of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
